Police rescue suicidal man who jumped into Thermaic Gulf

The heroic act of two police officers in Thessaloniki, who saved the life of a citizen who jumped into the harbor with the intention of committing suicide, was covered by the Greek media.

Police officer Panagiotis Batsakrinos, one of the man’s rescuers, described the moments of the operation to prevent suicide. A resident of Thessaloniki, who decided to take his own life and commit suicide, jumped into the Thermaikos Gulf with his feet tied. The story of the peace officer: “My colleague and I were on duty when a frightened citizen approached us and said that a little further a man fell into the sea to commit suicide. Citizens also said that he tied his feet and took medicine. The suicidal man is in a state of suffocation, and also put on surgical masks on his face so that he could not breathe.

When we saw a man in the sea, without hesitation, we dived after him. Nevertheless, he shouted that we should not dare to approach him and threatened otherwise “to drown us.” But we still pulled it out, albeit with difficulty. Because it is difficult to save a person when he does not want to be saved. When the three of us finally approached the pier, colleagues threw a rope to help pull a citizen out of the water. Then we made sure that his legs were tied. But, thank God, he was saved.

We assured him that we would help him get all the support he needed, repeating that under no circumstances is suicide an option. Indeed, today there are many organizations that could help solve existing problems. We told him: “As soon as we get you out, we will go with you, we will turn to the right place and resolve all the issues that have arisen.”
