Man suffers heatstroke while trying to break world record

The water reached a temperature of +33°C in Lake Trasimeno (Perugia, Italy), and the man who was there, who intended to set a world record, was forced to suspend the adventure.

Ross Edgley reportedly showed the results of an attempt to beat world record for the longest continuous swim in a lake. This week, the Briton was hoping to swim 171 km non-stop on Lake Trasimeno, near Perugia in Italy.

Before starting his attempt, he said that he was excited, but in the end, his attempt was canceled due to very difficult conditions after 33 hours, 27 minutes and 70 kilometers in the water, which caused many problems, including risk of kidney damage. The water in the place where he decided to stop reached +33°C.

In an Instagram post, Edgley thanked his fans for their support, “Thank you all for your support! Unfortunately, this heatwave that hit Italy this week is critical. This means that air temperatures can reach a record high of +48°C in some places, and water temperatures of +33°C. It is impossible to swim under such extreme conditions. The “adventure” was cut short for about 70 km due to heat stroke and concerns about dehydration and kidney damage. I’m going to take a break and eat pizza, but I wanted to say a big thank you to everyone.”

Along with the post, Edgley shared several snapshots of the condition of his skin due to his time in the water.

This not Edgley’s first attempt at such a feat – last year he swam in Loch Ness for 59 hours (or 79 km) before withdrawing for medical reasons. He ended up in the hospital after hypothermia, kidney failure and a bacterial infection.

It is worth noting that world record for longest continuous swim in a lake belongs to Sarah Thomas, who swam 168.3 kilometers in 67 hours and 16 minutes on August 7-10, 2017.
