Fires: Lagonisi, Saronida, Anavyssos, Loutraki – thousands of people evacuated


Severe fires in Attica led to the evacuation of residents from Lagonisi, Saronida, Anavyssos. The fire approached residential buildings and a children’s camp in Loutraki. The fire brigade reports dozens of large fires in Greece.

Ground and air forces were immediately mobilized, since residential buildings are located near the place where the fire front originated. In the areas of Lagonisi, Saronida, Anavyssos, evacuation orders have been issued. Markopoulou Avenue is closed.

According to fire service spokesman Janis Artopios, “by phone 112 the fourth warning has already been transmitted. Residents of Lagonisi, Anavyssos and Saronida are being urged to evacuate the areas in the direction of Palea Fokea as a precautionary measure. According to him, strong winds of magnitude 6-7 are blowing in the area, with gusts of up to 8 on the Beaufort scale. All fire protection forces are making efforts to localize the fire. 150 firefighters, 6 teams of volunteers, including 31 Romanian firefighters, 40 water carrier firefighters, are participating in the extinguishing, and 7 aircraft, 4 helicopters are working from the air, including 1 to coordinate actions“.

At the same time, Janis Artopios noted that “conditions are challenging and conducive to the creation of new fire fronts.”

Speaking to MEGA, Dimitris Ginis, secretary of the Kouvara community, said the fire front is over 3 kilometers long and the fire is now approaching Kalyvia.
