Large fire in the forest area in Markopoulos Oropou

A large force of firefighters, reinforced by aviation, was sent to extinguish a fire that arose in a forested area in Markopulo-Oropou, located near Athens.

Currently, 84 firefighters with 5 groups of volunteers and 21 vehicles are working at the scene of the fire, and 4 helicopters, one of which is for coordination, and 4 aircraft are providing air assistance.

According to the fire brigade, the fire broke out at 1:45 p.m. in a wooded area on a hillside, and no residences are at risk. A large number of firefighters involved in extinguishing is due to the fact that the fire is raging in a remote area with mountainous terrain.

The traffic authority has stopped traffic on the Malakasas-Markopoulos provincial road, from the intersection with the Athens-Lamia national road, and on Agias Kyriakis street from the height of the Polidendri Stadium, in the traffic flow towards Markopoulos Oropou.

According to the message of the mayor of Oropos, Giorgos Giasimakis, to the Naftemporiki TV channel, the fire is quite large and covers the forest. The Greek fire brigade has issued a notice announcing the increase in the level of fire danger on July 7 to category 3 in the region of Attica, Evia, Crete, the islands of the Aegean and Ionian Seas.
