12 people found guilty in the murder of Alkis Kambanos in Thessaloniki


Twelve young hooligans were unanimously found guilty of killing 19-year-old Alkis and injuring two of his friends by a mixed jury in Thessaloniki on Thursday.

Alkis Kambanos died due to stab wounds, two more were stabbed multiple times in an attack on the night of February 1, 2022 in Thessaloniki. The deceased young man was stabbed in the inner part of the upper thigh, his femoral artery was damaged, because of which he died from rapid blood loss. Two others, aged 19 and 20, were taken to the hospital, where they received medical attention. Attack victim Alkis Kambanos was killed in a northern city in February 2022 after a football match involving a team the defendants were rooting for. Seven of the twelve young people were found guilty of manslaughter with possible intent, and five of complicity. In addition, several defendants were found guilty on charges ranging from attempted murder to complicity in injuring two friends who accompanied Cambanos.

“Their lies lasted 40 seconds”

“Their perjury lasted 40 seconds. It takes courage to confess, but their mouths were shut,” the lawyer said, referring to the 12 perpetrators. “The defendants said they wanted a fair trial, but if they were tried in Iran, they would be stoned. One covered the other, no one saw anything. They tried to use the evidence to their advantage. The court was able to decide which of the 12 criminals had beaten Alkis and his friends,” Alkis’ family lawyer stressed.

The verdict will be announced next week.

Kambanos was severely beaten and stabbed in the upper thigh, after which he bled to death. Two of his friends, aged 19 and 20, were injured in an attack by football fans on February 1, 2022. Before the attack, the defendants asked the three friends which team they supported. They then attacked the victims with knives, clubs, metal pipes, crowbars and a folding sickle, with murderous intent, according to the prosecutor’s report.

Each of the 12 defendants was found guilty as follows:

  • 1st for complicity in murder with probable intent, complicity in attempted murder of ΑΒ and ΔΚ with probable intent, for fighting, for possession of an object capable of causing bodily harm, for carrying a weapon. Not guilty of using a weapon.
  • 2nd for manslaughter with possible intent, attempted murder with possible intent, complicity in attempted murder with possible intent, fighting, possession of an object that can cause bodily harm, carrying a weapon and using a weapon.
  • 3rd for manslaughter with possible intent, complicity in two attempted murders with possible intent, disorderly conduct, possession of an object capable of causing bodily harm, carrying a weapon, and using a weapon.
