According to the LGBT Military portal, approximately 50,000 LGBT soldiers serve in the ranks of the Ukrainian armed forces. And they have serious problems.
How writes The Telegraph, representatives of the LGBT community are very hopeful that the government will hear and understand their concerns. One of the main ones is the inability to legitimize the relationship, and therefore, to obtain information about a partner who died in the war, make an important medical decision or arrange for a funeral.
They expect that their active participation in the war, and, importantly, the perception of homophobia as a “traditionally Russian value” will lead to increased tolerance for same-sex relationships in Ukrainian society. One of the military tells the publication, calling for the legalization of same-sex relationships: “When you evacuate someone as a medic, and you are gay, people do not ask you to stop and wait for another medic.”
