Train with 400 passengers stuck in tunnel for hours

A train with 400 passengers got stuck on Thursday in a tunnel between Domokos and Lianoklady (Fthiotida, Central Greece), according to the Hellenic Train operating company.

Railroad workers’ unions say safety concerns remain four months after the Tempi tragedy, when 57 people were killed and dozens injured in a collision between two trains.

Approximately 400 passengers on the Intercity 53 train experienced discomfort and fear when a breakdown caused the train to stop inside the 6.5-kilometre tunnel between Domokos and Lianoklady. The train from Thessaloniki to Athens was stuck in the Otris tunnel near Styrfax and was there from 10:15 am to approximately 12:45 pm on Thursday, June 29, 2023.

The reason for the stop was a mechanical failure of the train, and the passengers were greatly disturbed and frightened as the train plunged into darkness. Musician Spontywho was on board, tweeted:

“The rotten Hellenic Train has suddenly broken down in the tunnel near Lianoklady. We’ve been waiting for 1.5 hours. Hellenic Train, after killing 57 passengers in Tempi, still has a ‘drive as we go’ policy.”
