Rhodes: tourist boat with 82 passengers burnt down, two injured

A tourist boat with 82 people on board caught fire in Stegna, near Rhodes, on Thursday and was completely destroyed.

Many passengers jumped into the sea to escape the flames and thick smoke and swam to the nearest beach, while others were picked up by boats that rushed to the scene.

A nine-year-old girl and a 50-year-old woman were taken to the hospital with minor burns. According to doctors, their state of health does not cause concern. A large number of boats gathered at the scene, which were ordered to help and rescue passengers, and several ambulances arrived at the port.

Initial reports indicate that 82 passengers had no major safety issues as most of them left the ship by jumping into the sea as it was close to shore. Ambulance rescuers arrived in the area to provide first aid to passengers who safely disembarked from the boat.

Earlier, a helicopter flew over the burning boat to assess the extent of the problem. As of 19:20 on June 29, passengers were taken by bus to their hotels. They are in good health, according to local media “rodiaki.gr».

The fire on the ship was completely extinguished, but nevertheless it was completely destroyed. The Central Port Authority of Rhodes has ordered action to be taken to combat possible sea pollution. The Port Authority is investigating the cause of the fire.
