Flooded houses, stuck cars, roads turned into rivers and flooded tunnels – bad weather is raging in Thessaloniki.

Early Saturday morning it started to rain with lots of lightning. There were power outages in places. Resident of one of the districts of the city tells:

“At about 4:30 we heard a roar, there was still little rain. I went out to the balcony and I see that there is a huge stream. We removed the cars so they wouldn’t be swept away by the river. All the houses were flooded, and this is the second time in two or three months.”

In the center of Thessaloniki, roads turned into rivers, and in the west, water flooded at home, and the fire department was called to pump it out.

In Evosmos, tunnels were flooded, cars were blocked, which only with the help of firefighters left the scene. In the region, heavy rains began at 3 am and continue without interruption. The river in Πολύχνη overflowed its banks and the water flooded the houses. October 26 Street disappeared under water.

By 8 a.m., 300 calls had been received by the fire brigade’s operational headquarters, in most cases for pumping water. In all likelihood, the number of calls will increase in the coming hours, as people will go to work and many businesses will be flooded.
