Meteorologists predict "year without summer" in Europe

The weather conditions in May, with increased cloudiness, local rains and low temperatures, will continue into Juneaccording to the mathematical model of the European Center for Medium-range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), which shows the instability of the weather until at least early July.

Asked if we will see the summer we are used to in Greece this year, Kostas Lagovardos, director of research at the National Observatory of Athens, replies that “there will be no change in the weather model until at least the end of the month.”

Instability will continue throughout June

“The weather in June will repeat May,” he says, commenting on the forecasts of his European colleagues. “That is, we will continue to have somewhat unstable weather, rains in all Mediterranean countries and in Greece, mainly on the mainland. In Greece, the temperature will still be slightly below normal. At least for the next week, this forecast is correct,” emphasizes Lagovardos.

Meteorologists are already talking about a year without summer on the “Old Continent”

The ECMWF mathematical model shows weather instability until July. Should we have heatwaves in the third month of the summer season i.e. in August? Whatever is said at this time, according to experts, it will be extremely reckless.

However, many meteorologists are already saying that there will be a year without a summer on the “Old Continent”, which will be a two-century record, since the last time this happened was in 1816.

April and May were unusually cold and rainy months across much of Europe, according to the European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts, with rainfall breaking records in many parts of the country in Italy, finally ending a 16-month-long drought.

What about the heat
Indicative in this regard is a recent tweet by the Italian meteorologist Guido Guidi: “On June 27, a new version of the European high-resolution mathematical model ECMWF will be released, the maps of which are already available. But the first data it shows is clear. We could reach mid-July without any or a heat wave that would really hit the countries of the Mediterranean, especially Italy, Greece and the Balkans.”

Is summer possible without… summer? While there can be no definitive answers, the director of research at the National Observatory of Athens concludes that “this particular mathematical model is considered one of the most reliable. Whether we will have heat waves later in July or August, we do not know at this time. risky.”

And AccuWeather sees… a delay in summer
A few days ago, AccuWeather meteorologist Tyler Royce reported that everything points to a delay in summer in Greece and Southern Europe this year.

“We believe that the pattern that existed in May will continue at least during the first half of the summer season. This will allow any prolonged summer heat to be postponed to the second half of the season. This does not mean that there cannot be a day in June or early July when temperatures peak at or above 35 degrees,” an AccuWeather expert said.

“The threat of extreme temperatures this summer appears to be lower than the historical average, especially for the northern half of the country. For the southern half, especially around Athens, the threat of extreme heat this summer is about in line with any year’s expectations – near the historical average. Historical average the indicator for the number of days when the maximum temperature exceeds 32C in Athens is 47 days for the summer months of June, July and August. This summer we can see figures of 47-55 days, again with the emphasis that most of them will occur during the second half of the summer,” Royce added.
