How a Victim of Domestic Violence in Crete Was Saved Thanks to… Google Translate

An Albanian woman was saved from the hands of her husband and his brother in Crete, thanks to the Google Translate app.

According to Cretalive, a 39-year-old woman with a minor child of 12 was beaten by her 43-year-old husband, also from Albania, along with his 46-year-old brother. The men loaded the woman and her son into the car and left the house. On the way, they met a patrol car and, panicking, tried to escape.

The incident took place on Thursday in Platanias, in Chania, and what happened is described by the secretary of the Chania Police Union:

“Another shift ended a while ago, which reminded me why I love this job! Congratulations to my colleagues who solved the domestic violence crime right at the scene of the crime this afternoon. In particular, while patrolling the streets of Chania, we noticed a suspiciously moving car and decided to check it out. The car accelerated and did not stop. After a few meters, our 2 patrol cars stopped him. Inside was a family of three foreigners and another relative. At this point, the woman showed us with signs, and also with the help of Google translator, since she did not speak Greek, that both her and her child had been beaten all day. The two foreigners who were in the car and pointed out by the woman were arrested.”

The follow-up took place at the Chania police station, specifically the Domestic Violence Unit.
