The Supreme Court of the Netherlands, after many years of litigation, issued a verdict: to return the “Scythian” gold to Ukraine.
Thus, the Supreme Court writes European Pravda confirmed the decision taken in October 2021 by the Amsterdam Court of Appeal. The decision says:
“The Supreme Court dismissed the cassation appeal of the ‘Crimean museums’, thus the decision of the court (Amsterdam Court of Appeal) remains in force.”
Recall that the Allard Pearson Museum in Amsterdam received items from four Crimean museums for temporary use in 2014. The collection of “Scythian gold” was taken to Amsterdam to participate in the exhibition “Crimea: Gold and the Secrets of the Black Sea”, which was held at the Pearson Museum.
The exhibition consists of collections from five museums, one of which is located in Kyiv, and four – in the Crimea. Among the 500 exhibits are artifacts made of Scythian gold, a ceremonial helmet, precious stones and swords of the ancient Greeks and Scythians. After the annexation of the peninsula by Russia, it became unclear to whom to return valuable exhibits: to museums in the occupied Crimea or Ukraine.
On December 14, 2016, the Amsterdam court decided to return “Scythian gold” to Ukraine, but in January 2017, Crimean museums began the process of appealing the decision. The court in Amsterdam in 2021 ruled in favor of Ukraine. After that, the Crimean museums appealed to the Supreme Court. On June 9, he decided that the treasures are the cultural heritage of all Ukraine. Now, after a decision has been made, the dispute is over and the treasures will return to the country. The judgment states: “The decision of the Supreme Court put an end to this dispute. The Allard Pearson Museum should transfer art values to the state of Ukraine, and not to Crimean museums.”
