Souvlaki… for 15 euros

Once upon a time, souvlaki was a cheap “street” food. And here, come on! Everything flows, everything changes and, we note, often not for the better.

The prices at which simple wrapped souvlaki are sold in the narrow streets of Mykonos are very high. For gyros you will have to pay from 9.40 to 15 euros!

As the owner of the steakhouse tells MEGA: “Pork pie 9.40 euros and also with a straw. We have special halloumi cheese gyros for 13.90 euros or with kebab gyros inside for 14.90€. If you take the usual portion (chicken, pork), the dish will cost you 17.50 euros. We also have specials (with a variety of ingredients) that cost 19.90 euros. If you want a portion that also has halloumi cheese, it costs 24.5 euros.”

On Santorini prices for souvlaki (gyros):

  • “wrapped” 6.50 euros
  • Portion from 16 euros.

On Paros

  • “wrapped” EUR 5.50
  • Portion from 14 euros.

“Now in the last ten days, meat prices have risen again, people are in shock,” says the owner of the steakhouse. Speaking to MEGA and Live News, Petros Nazos, a journalist for Mykonos Live TV, said: “The truth lies somewhere in the middle. In fact, stores spend too much money to open at this point – “for air” and for rent (πάρα πολλά λεφτά “σε αέρα” και σε ενοίκιο). That is, a small souvlatizidiko was rented for 4,000 euros, and the owner paid 150,000 euros “for air”, souvlaki cannot be cheap. In addition, housing for staff costs 15,000 euros for the owners of the barbecue.”

Of course, all this is paid by the consumer out of his own pocket. Nothing personal. Just business.
