The hot summer, as predicted by meteorologists, carries with it a high risk of fires. IN EU reinforce their firefighting air fleet and deploy firefighting rapid response teams.
The number of planes and helicopters used to fight forest fires has increased from thirteen to twenty-eight this year. Janez Lenarcic, EU Commissioner for Crisis Management, explains:
“That year was much drier than usual. The drought, combined with the expected heat, is by far the main cause of wildfires.”
The politician announced that firefighters have 10 Canadair aircraft, 14 amphibious aircraft and four helicopters at their disposal this year. All of them will be deployed in ten European countries. And in Greece, Portugal and France, 400 firefighters are deployed in advance, ready for an immediate response. The European Commissioner also stressed the importance of the community civil protection mechanism, which, unfortunately, has to be activated more and more often.
The hottest five years in the history of meteorological observations have come on Earth. UN climatologists predict record warm years 2023-2027. A new report from the World Meteorological Organization predicts that two factors will converge in the coming years – a temporary heat spike from El Niño (a temperature fluctuation in the Pacific Ocean that affects the whole world) and warming from burning coal, oil and gas.
