1109 Russians apply for asylum in Finland

More than a thousand Russian citizens who are hiding from mobilization are awaiting the decision of the Finnish authorities to grant political asylum.

However, the authorities are awaiting the position of the European Union on this issue, writes Finnish edition YLE, citing information from Sanna Sutter, head of the Migration Department of the Finnish Interior Ministry. According to Migri, the Finnish Immigration Service, 1,109 Russian citizens of military age have requested political asylum in their country to avoid conscription for military service. However, Sutter says the authorities have not been able to make a decision, and it is not known when the European Union will provide a roadmap on this issue.

In January, Finland suspended consideration of asylum cases for Russians who fled from mobilization. This decision was justified by the fact that the Finnish authorities collect information about social conditions in Russia and directly about the applicants. And since October 2022, Finland has closed the border for Russians with tourist visas.
