Monkeypox: WHO announces "lights out"

The World Health Organization has declared the end of the global monkeypox emergency.

It’s been almost a year since it was announced global threat in public health related to Mpox (the official name for monkeypox). It is caused by a virus of the same family as smallpox. WHO notes that the virus still exists, so outbreaks of the disease are possible, but the peak of the danger is behind us.

monkeypox can be transmitted through close contact with an infected person. Initial symptoms include headache, fever, back and muscle pain, and swelling. After the end of the fever, a rash appears: as a rule, first on the face, then on the palms and soles, then on other parts of the body.

WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus urges countries to “remain vigilant” and cautious. Anyone with the virus should abstain from sex while they have symptoms to prevent passing the virus on to others. Almost 90% fewer cases have been reported in the last three months compared to the previous three-month period, he said, meaning that the highest level of alert is no longer required.

More than 87,000 cases and 140 deaths in 111 countries have been reported during the global outbreak, according to the World Health Organization. There have been 10 cases in the UK since the beginning of the year, notes Air Force.
