The national composition of the center of Athens has changed significantly in recent years, now almost half of its inhabitants belong to immigrants from other countries.
In yesterday’s debates of political leaders the question of demographics should have been asked to give clear answers to what the parties intend to do in the current difficult situation. However, politicians have tried to avoid these questions, because this topic is too sensitive, and no one seems ready to tackle it. Everyone diligently avoids touching it during the pre-election period, as if it is considered a loser.
According to a Greek police report, today 25% of the inhabitants of the city of Athens are foreigners, legal and illegal. In some areas, such as Patisia, Agios Panteleimon, Agios Pavlos, Victoria Square and others close to the city centre, changes are happening so fast that it is only a matter of time before foreigners become the majority of the population. This means that there will be fewer native Greeks than foreigners.
The percentage of foreigners in these areas reaches 45-49%, and it is quite possible that the real figures are already noticeably higher. In fact, ghettos have already been created in the center of Athens, inhabited by immigrants from Africa and Asia.
