Cancellation of a paper ticket for public transport

Contactless payments are being implemented on city buses in 33 cities and islands, replacing the use of cash.

KTEL, Visa and NBG Pay announced the launch of the program contactless payments on city buses in 33 cities in mainland and island Greece. Larisa became the first city in which new bus ticket system. Other cities will soon follow suit. By enabling card acceptance on buses, Visa, NBG Pay and ΚΤΕΛ are improving the quality of service for millions of passengers, helping them save time and avoid carrying cash.

With the activation of contactless payments in public transport, residents and visitors of cities will be able to pay for their ticket by simply “swiping” their card, mobile phone or smart watch on the ticket composting machine. This means they don’t have to worry about cash, and they don’t have to wait in line to buy tickets or look for where to buy them.

“The introduction of the contactless payment program is a modernization of the city’s ΚΤΕΛ services for passengers and simplifies the fare payment process. With the activation of contactless payments in public transport, passengers will be able to buy tickets in real time, simply by “writing off” the amount from their card, or using a mobile phone and smart watch. Therefore, the need to use cash to pay for tickets will be eliminated in the near future,” the statement said.
