Greece begins mandatory animal rights training for police

From Wednesday May 10, Greek police officers across the country will begin mandatory training on animal rights.

Now at least one police officer in each precinct will receive the knowledge and skills to deal with animal cruelty cases, whether they are homeless, domestic, working or game animals, exotic species and others, the police said.

Regarding the number of violations of animal welfare laws in the first four months of 2023, Citizens Protection Minister Takis Theodorikakos told state news agency amna that 705 cases were filed, 138 people were arrested, and 659 fines were imposed for a total of 3,317,800 euros. .

The task of police training was undertaken by the instructors of Zero Stray Academy and Zero Stray Pawject at no cost to the Greek State, in cooperation with the Education and Development Departments of the Greek Police.

In the past couple of years, reports of animal cruelty in Greece have been coming in on a daily basis as citizens have become more aware of such issues, yet the police, especially in rural areas, do not often respond properly. Animal rights education seems to be a good first step.
