Greece: Telegram porn scandal

Hundreds of women, including underage girls, became victims of the Telegram scandal.

It flared up because of the illegal trade in pornographic materials – sometimes real, but more often fake. According to complaints filed, the app created groups with thousands of members who shared and traded personal photos. Among the latest victims are two 12-year-old girls in Aspropyrgos, and the perpetrator turned out to be a teenager, only three years older than them.

The distribution of pornographic material, often edited or genuine without the consent of the victims, is often carried out for the purpose of blackmail. The first sign that personal photos have appeared on the Internet and circulate in suspicious closed Internet groups are massive friend requests from unknown men. One of the victims of the scandal, Eleni, says:

“Someone went to my Instagram profile, took a photo of me in a swimsuit, edited it and deleted the swimsuit.”

There are a lot of similar complaints; in social networks, attackers perform such actions even for the sake of a cruel joke. Typical is the recent case in Aspropyrgos where edited nude photographs of 12-year-old girls were circulated. The mother of one of them says:

“They took the photos that were on Instagram and edited them. It says they were naked. What does naked mean? It says they were naked from the shoulders down. They don’t have any, as he says, clothes. don’t wear clothes, he says. He claims he was in the group when the photos were taken. They chose photos of two girls from the school for fun, for ridicule.”

Such cases are resolved in court, but in most cases this does not happen – criminals cover their tracks on the Internet. Often they manage to undermine the family well-being of married women. CSI President, Retired Lieutenant General Manolis Sfakianakis says:

“A 33-year-old girl got engaged, married, gave birth to a child. And when she gave birth to her first child, the blackmailer sent her husband “revenge pornography” with videos of her romance at 23 – sex and sexual acts. The marriage was shaken, the husband divorced, and the girl was left alone with child.”

According to experts, the only way to combat this phenomenon is not to advertise personal moments and not give access to strangers, writes CNN Greece.
