The first US state, New York, passed a new law banning the use of natural gas for heating and cooking in some new buildings.
The main goal of the innovation is to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. The law passed despite opposition from Republicans and fossil fuel advocates who see the changes as costly and offensive. Late Tuesday, the state House and Senate approved the proposal, which is included in New York’s $229 billion budget. Last week, lawmakers and Gov. Kathy Hokul agreed on the overall developments in the budget. Carl Histie, Speaker of the House of Representatives, says:
“Changing how we produce and use energy to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels will help ensure a healthier environment for us and our children.”
Numerous cities across the US have taken or are considering measures to completely ban the use of natural gas in new construction in response to public health and climate concerns. However, they are facing stiff resistance from restaurants, appliance companies and the gas industry lobby. Robert Orth, Republican Senator, stated:
“An unconstitutional ban on natural gas installations, the first of its kind in the country, will drastically increase utility bills and housing costs.”
Until the new law is ratified, from 2026, in newly built office buildings and apartment buildings up to seven floors, there will be only an electrical installation. Three years later, this measure will be extended to larger buildings. But there are exceptions: hospitals, infrastructure and catering facilities are exempt from innovation. Buildings will also be excluded, regardless of their use, if the local power grid cannot meet their needs. Pre-existing buildings are also unaffected, writes CNN Greece.
