Greeks greeted May Day with thousands of demonstrations and May Days

Despite the rainy weather, thousands of Greeks demonstrated in many cities of the country, and many then went to the forest for May Day.

The rally in Athens, on the main square of the country, began with the reading of the poem “Be silent, do not speak” by the Turkish poet and writer Aziz Nesin, which was read by the actor Vasilis Kolovos.
The participants chanted slogans calling for the struggle for their rights, declared that the struggle of the working people, begun in 1886 in Chicago, continues.
Secretary General of the Communist Party of Greece (KKE) Dimitris Koutsoumbas, in a statement to the media, called for support for the KKE and the working people’s movement in the parliamentary elections on May 21, “to prevent anti-popular measures, to breathe a sigh of relief, but above all, to open the way for radical changes in the economy and society , against the anti-popular policy of all governments of capital, EUNATO, exploiters of the people”.

“In the elections of May 21, by voting for the KKE, we are strengthening it so that our people, the working people’s movement, the social alliance of the working class with the self-employed in towns and villages are strong, in order to prevent anti-popular measures, breathe a sigh of relief, but above all, to open the way for radical changes in the economy and society, to fight against the anti-people policies of all capitalist governments, the EU, NATO, the exploiters of our people. We continue our fight with a vengeance!”

“The working class can abolish capitalist slavery and build a new society without exploiters and their parasitism,” Georgios Perros, a member of the Secretariat of the All-Workers’ Fighting Front (PAME), emphasized in his speech.

G. Perros noted that “no promised government Messiah can provide a solution to the everyday and acute problems that every working family faces. On the contrary, a common program, a common god, in which all the parties that support the exploitative system believe, requires the existence of a powerful working people’s movement on May 22, strong trade unions that can repel its attacks.

The strike actions in Athens were attended by a delegation of trade unionists from France, who is in Greece and shares their experience of many months of struggle against the government and employers. Dimitris Gionis, chairman of the trade unions of student dentists of Athens, made a welcoming speech on behalf of the students. “We pay tribute to the workers who create all the wealth with their labor, mind,” he said, and also stressed that “the policy that puts profit above our life will not stop if we do not stop it.”
