Research results expected in the Ionian Sea by the end of 2023

The first reliable seismic results in the Ionian Sea and the area west/southwest of the coast of Crete will be received by the end of 2023, and these data will determine whether exploration drilling takes place, sources in the hydrocarbon industry said on Monday.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of an event hosted by Hellenic Hydrocarbons and Energy Resources Management Company SA (HEREMA) to launch a white paper on CO2 storage, the same sources said that Energean is expected to start its first exploration drilling at Ioannina.

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, speaking from Crete, said that the New Democracy government has launched the first fundamental seismic surveys in southwest Crete, and the data from these surveys are now being studied by the company to find out exactly if there are hydrocarbons or natural gas in the region. He added that if the answer is yes, then the first drilling should take place by 2026.

The Hellenic Hydrocarbon and Energy Management Company oversees the process of interpreting seismic survey data and the deadlines set for hydrocarbon exploration. In Ioannina, the first drilling at the Dzhurganista field is officially scheduled for this year, but since an environmental license has not yet been obtained, a more realistic target is to start drilling in 2024. Energean owns all research and exploration rights in the region.
