Italian resort introduces fines for tourists

Recently in Italy introduced a fine for tourists for vandalism, it will start at 10,000 euros and can go up to 60,000 euros. And now the authorities of Portofino intend to fine… selfie lovers.

Edition BB.LV tellsthat in the picturesque Italian town of Portofino fines have been introduced for tourists who linger at the shooting sites in order to take a selfie. Now photo lovers may well pay 275 euros for their “passion”.

The ordinance went into effect in early April, marking two “red zones” in Portofino on the Italian Riviera. According to the innovation, people who stay “too long” in these zones will be forced to pay a fine. The most interesting thing is that the exact time, how much is “too long” – is unknown. However, it is emphasized that the rule will be valid daily until October 15, from morning to 18 hours.

Although it would not be entirely correct to call the innovation a hunt for selfie lovers – the rule applies not only to them. This is part of a government effort to prevent overcrowding during the peak tourist season in busy parts of the tourist fishing town.

Tiny Portofino has a population of less than 500 but is expecting a “big influx” of visitors in the coming months, based on previous tourist numbers, current bookings and cruise ship schedules.

The mayor of Portofino, Matteo Viacava, said the purpose of the ordinance is to prevent dangerous situations caused by pedestrian traffic. He hopes this will put an end to the “anarchist chaos” seen in the region in the past. The mayor noted that this rule was not intended to limit access for those who wish to visit and photograph Portofino.
