A four-story parking lot collapsed in New York, killing one and injuring five.
How informs Air Force, the incident took place in Manhattan’s financial district. First, the second floor of a multi-level car park collapsed, the collapse occurred around 16:00 local time. John Esposito, New York City Fire Chief, noted that the rescue operation was “extremely dangerous” for firefighters and called the design “very unstable”:
“We had firefighters inside the building doing searches. The building continued to collapse. We currently believe that all workers who were at risk are accounted for, all outside the building.”
The difficulty arose when evacuating one injured worker who could not get out on his own, says Esposito:
“We were able to send firefighters over there, into the building, get him through the roof to another building, and bring him down safely.”
Mayor Eric Adams noted the vital role of new technologies in emergency response:
“I want to point out that, thank God, we had a robotic dog that could enter the building.”
The robot dog sent a video from inside the building, after which drones were launched there to conduct an assessment and search. Authorities said all workers inside the building have been released and are out of danger. The cause of the collapse is not yet known, officials said. Construction Department officials are checking adjacent buildings for damage.
