Powerful explosion in Russian Belgorod

A huge crater was formed as a result of a powerful explosion near residential buildings at the intersection of Vatutin and Gubkin streets in the Russian city of Belgorod. The Russian Defense Ministry called the reason.

According to the military department, during the flight of the Su-34 over the city, an abnormal descent of aviation ammunition occurred, informs TASS, that is, a Russian bomb fell on Belgorod. The message says:

“April 20, 2023, at about 22:15 Moscow time, during the flight of the Su-34 aircraft of the Aerospace Forces over the city of Belgorod, an abnormal descent of aviation ammunition occurred.”

According to the ministry, as a result of the incident, there is damage to residential buildings, but there are no casualties. An investigation is already underway. The governor of the Belgorod region Vyacheslav Gladkov reported two victims. Earlier in his Telegram channel, he announced the explosion. According to him, a funnel with a radius of about 20 meters formed on one of the central streets. Mayor Valentin Demidov, head of the regional security department Yevgeny Vorobyov, all operational and emergency services arrived at the scene of the emergency.

The mayor said that “several cars were damaged as a result of the explosion, a crater with a radius of about 20 meters was formed,” and “there are destructions in several apartments as a result of the explosion on Shalandina Street.”

Gladkov clarified that during the survey of the territory, destruction was found in 4 apartments of an apartment building on Shalandina Street. The force of the impact was so great that the shock wave threw the car onto the roof of the store.

According to preliminary data, two women were injured: one with a craniocerebral injury in a state of moderate severity was hospitalized, the second refused hospitalization with abrasions. The residents of the house have been evacuated.

Versions of the event in the media, before the official version was announced, differed. Russian telegram channels write about the attack on the city of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The most common version in Ukrainian publics is the dropping of a KAB bomb from a Russian plane, which was supposed to fly to Kharkov, but due to some kind of failure fell on Belgorod.
