US: 5 killed and 6 injured in shooting at bank in Kentucky

Five people were killed in a shooting in the US city of Louisville, Kentucky. At least six other people, including a police officer, were taken to hospital with “various injuries.”

The incident occurred on April 10 in the morning local time. Arriving at the scene, the police exchanged fire with the attacker, as a result of which the attacker died on the spot.. Two policemen were among the injured, one of them in critical condition.

Shortly after confirming the attack, police said the shooter was dead, without providing further details. It was unclear if the five dead included the shooter, whom police identified as a current or former bank employee.

Police are still trying to determine if the shooter shot himself or was shot dead by police, Paul Humphrey, deputy chief of the Louisville Police Department, told reporters.

Police said they responded within minutes to a report of an attack at approximately 8:30 a.m. on an Old National Bank branch located near the Slugger Field baseball stadium in the city center.

At least two police officers were among the eight injured. The condition of two wounded in the hospital, including one policeman, is critical.

“Our entire community will work together to prevent these horrific acts of gun violence, here and across the state,” Mayor Craig Greenberg told reporters at a briefing.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is involved in the investigation. US President Joe Biden was briefed on the incident, said CNN White House representative.

The governor arrived Kentucky Andy Beshear. He said that two of his close friends became the victims of the shooter, another victim was taken to the hospital with a wound.

According to the non-profit group Gun Violence Archive, there have been 146 mass shooting incidents in the US this year in which four or more people were killed, not counting the shooter.
