As part of an investigation into a case to identify people illegally in possession of ancient objects, a 61-year-old man was found yesterday, April 7, in the Chalkidiki region after he had previously tried to send a package to a virtual recipient in Germany, which contained 180 antique coins.
The valuable cargo was sent through a transport company in Thessaloniki. Antiquities were carefully hidden in a container of olive oil.
During the arrest, the antiquary was charged with the following charges: theft of antiquities, illegal possession of a large number of ancient coins and two ceramic vases.
Police officers from the Department of Cultural Heritage and Antiquities Protection of the Thessaloniki Security Directorate concluded that the confiscated items were of particular value and were subject to the provisions of antiquities protection legislation.
During a search conducted in the man’s houses (in Halkidiki and in Thessaloniki), 16 more coins, a bronze medallion, two ceramic vessels and a lead sling were found and confiscated. The detainee was taken to the competent prosecutor’s office.
