Labor shortage in Greek hotels by specialty and region

At the height of the summer season 2022, 60,225 vacancies were registered out of 262,981 provided by the organizational structure of hotels at the national level. That is, the shortfall was 23%, or more than 1 out of 5 places were not filled. The deficit rate was the same in almost all departments and ranged from 21% to 24%.

The above figures are the result of an updated study by the Institute of the Association of Greek Tourism Enterprises (ΙΝΣΕΤΕ) on the topic: “Employment and labor shortages in Greek hotels in the peak of the summer season 2022”. The study was prepared using primary studies conducted by the Institute of Research and Forecasting of Tourism (ινστιτούτο τουριστικών ερευνών και προβλέεων, ιτεπ) of the Greek hotel room (ăενοδοχελητητητητητηεου ελάδο strish).

Compared to the corresponding figures for the peak summer season of 2021, in 2022 the number of jobs increased, while the vacancy rate remained the same.

Waiter, receptionist, waiter, barista and helpdesk account for a total of 52% of all jobs, based on the organizational chart, i.e. the shortage of staff was 48%.

Numerically, the largest deficit was observed:

  • waitresses (7360 vacancies, or 12% of the total deficit and 18% of the total number of positions provided for in the staffing tables for this specialty),
  • waiters (5164 or 9% deficit and 22% of the corresponding positions envisaged),
  • waiter assistants (3883 or 6% shortfall and 21% of the corresponding positions envisaged),
  • administrators (3460 or 6% shortfall and 17% of foreseen positions).
  • barista/bartender (2729 or 5% and 24% respectively),
  • technical support service (2054 or 3% and 21% respectively).

Specialty with sommelier was the largest percentage of shortage in relation to the proposed positions (57% or 361 people), followed by a Guest Relations Manager (41% or 1083), Gardener’s Assistant (37% or 489) and Administrator Assistant (35% or 1393.

24% of the total shortage (14,346 vacancies) are registered in the South Aegean, 18% (10,808 vacancies) in Crete, 10% (5891 vacancies) in Central Macedonia and 14% (8378 vacancies) in the Ionian Islands.
