The most frequent negative reviews about Greece by foreign tourists


Alcoholic beverages, air conditioning and water are three of the problems that foreign tourists visiting Greece cite.

This follows from the annual report of the Institute of the Association of Greek Tourism Enterprises, where, among other things, an extensive report is presented on the comments made by tourists visiting our country.

By analyzing the comments, a list of the main thematic categories with the largest number of positive and negative mentions on the Internet in 2022. Some categories appear on both lists, but There are many more positive mentions than negative ones.according to INSET.

In the list of 18 categories that generated the most negative reviews tourists on the Internet about Greece, in the first place is the category “food-drink”. Most of the negative mentions made in 2022 contained the keyword “alcoholic drink” (“ποτό”).

Air conditioning is also a problem, which seems to “generate” many complaints from tourists. In second place on the list is the category “rooms” with 46,000 negative reviews, most of which contained the word “air conditioning” (not working or none at all).

In third place is the “maintenance” category with 26,000 mentions and the keyword “water” (lack of hot water, problem with the boiler, etc.). Also, negative reviews related to ice-cold water in the pools or insufficient cleaning, as well as the lack of hot water in the shower.

Topping the list of complaints is the “cleanliness” category with 21,000 negative reviews and the defining word “dirt”. There were also many complaints about the hustle and bustle, difficulty communicating with staff due to poor command of English and German, and the decoration (squalor and age) of the furniture.

The category “food-drink” is at the top of the list and has the most frequent positive comments: 193,000 mentions, most of which are related to breakfast.

In second place is the category “rooms” with 106,000 mentions, most of which contained the word “hotel”. They are followed by the categories “staff” with 103,000 positive reviews, “experience” with 85,000 and “cleanliness” with 69,000 reviews.

In terms of the General Satisfaction Index (GRI), Greece had 87% of hotels in 2022, compared to 87.1% in 2019. Majority individual indicators of hotels showed an improvement last year compared to 2019, except for the food, drink and entertainment categories.

Three indicators turned out to be “up to the mark”: cleanliness (91.2%), service (89.7%) and location (87.3%). The index of value for money was 84.9%, and “comfort in the room” – 84.6%. The general catering index fluctuated below 83.5%. The only metric that hovered below 80% was entertainment, at 76.7%.
