Heroin and cocaine dealer detained for recruiting minors to transport drugs

Employees of the prosecutor’s office for the fight against drug trafficking in Kalamata began to eliminate the criminal group involved in the sale of heroin and cocaine in large quantities.

The investigation lasted 3 years. After 19 people were identified as members, the police proceeded to arrest 12 people. There are three other people who are believed to be members of the organization but are currently in prison.

According to police sources, the members of the criminal organization were related by family ties, and the structure of the organization was similar to the activities of the Italian Ntrangheta.

The ‘Ndrangheta (Italian ‘Ndrangheta, from Greek ἀνδραγαθία “valor”) is a large Italian organized crime group originating from Calabria, the poorest province in Italy. Although not nearly as famous as the Sicilian Cosa Nostra and the Neapolitan Camorra, the ‘Ndrangheta is one of the most powerful criminal organizations in the world: the Eurispes Research Institute estimates its 2007 revenues at 47 billion euros. According to experts, the group imports most of the cocaine into Europe.

As the investigation established, even underage children were “recruited” to deliver drugs to buyers. According to the police statement, the activities of this particular organization seem to have started in November 2019, and its members managed to form a large circle of clientele, having received illegal financial benefits in excess of 500,000 euros over 3 years.

Yesterday, March 10, 12 arrested persons were brought to the courts of Kalamata. The accused are given a deadline for 9 of them to testify in court tomorrow morning, including the alleged leader, and the remaining 3 on Monday.

The 40-year-old man, in addition to founding, managing and leading the organization, is accused of involving other members in the group, assigning them certain roles and tasks in terms of transportation, storage, concealment, sale, delivery and drug trafficking.

In the course of a large-scale operation, searches were carried out in the houses, warehouses, open areas and vehicles of the detainees, where they found and seized:

  • cash in the amount of 660 euros obtained from drug trafficking,
  • 7 mobile phones with the same number of SIM cards,
  • 4 narcotic tablets,
  • 79 grams of liquid methadone.

In the context of months-long investigations, the following were seized at an earlier time:

  • heroin with a total weight of 4449.6 grams,
  • cocaine, total weight 110.8 grams,
  • cannabis, total weight 10.3 grams,
  • 44 narcotic tablets,
  • 2 hemp seedlings
  • Cell phones,
  • 3 vehicles,
  • hunting weapons (which were listed as “stolen”),
  • cash amount of 1790 euros, received from drug trafficking.
