Cohabitation as an opportunity to pay rent for housing

Cohabitation! This is perhaps one of the few opportunities available to address the soaring rental prices as well as the rising cost of living in Greece. However, this solution has its own complexities and problems, which this article will discuss.

“Hello, I am 43 years old, looking for a roommate in an apartment, the price should be 170 euros with water and electricity. I don’t drink alcohol, I don’t smoke and I’m looking for a furnished room.”

“I am a 32 year old student and working, smoker and I am looking for a house to share in the center of Athens.”

“I am interested in cohabitation in the Attica area. The amount I am willing to pay monthly is 200-250 euros.”

“I am planning to move to Athens and am looking for a roommate. I don’t have pets, but I love them. I do not smoke. I would prefer cohabitation with a girl. The ideal budget is around 350 euros with invoices”

The above ads are just one of hundreds posted on platforms created for this purpose. Users are also looking for a tenant in the house they live in to share rent, electricity and water. Rising prices and the energy crisis hit the low-income residents of Greece especially hard, as a result of which they began to choose the option of cohabitation en masse.

Revealing is a study conducted by ierax analytix in conjunction with the MyRoomie app, where they asked 1,509 people over the age of 18 to talk about their own opinions and experiences of living together.

According to the survey, 73% of respondents consider high rents to be the biggest problem. At the same time, 59% of respondents answered that they cohabited with a person outside the family, 50% with a romantic partner, 43% with a friend, 15% with a mutual acquaintance and 14% with a stranger. As expected, the best part of the cohabitation was the camaraderie with financial support and household help. Safety is also important, especially for women.

Approximately 3 out of 4 agree that high fees are the biggest problem when renting a house, and in fact 43% cannot afford to rent a house on their own at this time. According to the survey, 17% would feel comfortable living with someone they don’t know, this percentage is increasing among men and decreasing among women. The obstacles to living with a stranger are the fear of violence, theft, bad habits and cleanliness.
