Rooftop Photovoltaic Systems: Residential Subsidies

The “Rooftop Photovoltaics” program from the Greek Ministry of Environment and Energy is “on the way” – applications can be submitted in March.

The program will subsidize about 300,000 systems with beneficiary households, businesses and farmers. According to initial estimates, the number of households will be up to 120,000, farmers up to 90,000 and eligible businesses up to 90,000. The preliminary budget includes approved funds of 150 million euros, which is expected to increase during the course of the program.

The percentage of the subsidy will be determined on the basis of income and property, the amount will start at 40% and go up to 60%, with the largest support planned for recipients of the social tariff for households (KOT). It is assumed that:

• for residential consumers, subsidies will only be provided for photovoltaic systems that run on batteries;
• the subsidy will fully cover the cost of the battery and a certain percentage of the photovoltaic system;
• subsidies for solar energy without batteries will be provided only to vulnerable households;
• recipients of the social tariff KOT will receive a subsidy of 60%;
• for enterprises and farmers, a subsidy limit of up to 40% will be set, while photovoltaic cells do not have to be accompanied by batteries.

In case of farmers’ support, photovoltaic systems will work with net-metering energy compensation.

The benefit for households is expected to be approximately EUR 17,300 (for a residential building). Such data, based on an example, was announced at an event held by the Piraeus Chamber of Commerce and Industry (EBIP), the Association of Attica and Piraeus Enterprises (SVAP) and the A ENERGY investment forum last week.

The example concerned a household with a typical electricity consumption, i.e. 4500 kWh per year, which uses an electric hot water heater, with a 3 kW photovoltaic installation and a 5 kWh battery. The price of such a system is close to 11,500 euros, of which the order subsidy will cover 4,600 euros at an average support rate (50%).

Experts say that such a system will pay off in 7.8 years, and for the remaining 17.2 years, out of the 25 years stipulated by the contract, the profit will be 17,300 euros, writes CNN Greece.
