Metro in Thessaloniki, the most “long-playing project”, apparently, is almost ready for commissioning.
Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Georgios Karayiannis said: “We are fully fulfilling our obligations to operate the metro in Thessaloniki. The city sees that the metro is being completed, what restoration work has been carried out at all construction sites, and how they are progressing.”
According to APE-MPE, Mr. Karayiannis emphasized that “a few days ago, the people of Thessaloniki had the opportunity, thanks to an innovative architectural process”OPEN HOUSE”, see the Papafi station and the operation center of the Thessaloniki Metro, and appreciate that there are no mock-ups or tarpaulin. There are stations that are already fully ready for test operation. And in the next period of time, in early April, we will have the ability to conduct a test check along the entire length of the highway.
Thus, the deputy minister added, “we are entering the finish line. It will be the most modern subway in Europe, with rolling stock without drivers, fully automated, with modern, complex, innovative trains and mechanisms. The Metropolitan will also have an innovative security and operation system.
The official noted that the government has announced an international open tender for a public-private partnership agreement for the operation and maintenance of the Thessaloniki metro network. The winning company will be the first private operator to serve 310,000 citizens daily. The total income will be about 50 million euros. The tender is ongoing and two bids have been submitted by two large international companies from abroad.
