A new study sheds light on the preferences of thieves and the dark path that stolen cars are subsequently trafficked into.
Thieves’ preference detection is the data published by the online vehicle data cross-reference platform. According to CarVertical, in 2022, 1,200 stolen vehicles were identified on this platform alone, of which 50% were produced between 2014 and 2019. carandmotor.gr. Cars produced in 2017 lead in thefts, accounting for almost 10% of the total.
In terms of manufacturers, the thieves’ favorites seem to be German cars, especially premium ones, with Mercedes-Benz in first place at 14.7%, BMW second at 14.4% and Audi third at 10.4%. The top five is supplemented by two mass manufacturers: Ford (7.8% of cases of theft) and Volkswagen (6.8%).
The reason attackers have targeted ten-year-old cars is because many of them enter the used car market in third countries, and in the case of premium manufacturers, higher profit margins.
Another thing to consider is the fact that cars that have been more commercially successful are significantly more likely to be stolen as demand spare parts quite high.
