Belarus introduces the death penalty for high treason

The House of Representatives of Belarus approved the draft amendments to the Criminal Code in the second reading. The bill provides for the introduction of the death penalty for treason.

Belarusian state editionBelta quotes the message of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus:

“The draft law provides for: the possibility of applying an exceptional measure of punishment in the form of the death penalty to officials holding a public position, and to persons who are subject to the status of a serviceman who have committed a crime under Article 356 of the Criminal Code “Treason to the State””.

In addition, the law provides for a significant increase in the fine, from 5 to 50 thousand basic units, for committing crimes “against the peace and security of mankind, public safety, traffic safety, public health and the state.”

After the final adoption of the law, the period for which a person can be detained on suspicion of:

  • in high treason;
  • in a conspiracy to seize state power;
  • in espionage;
  • in an act of terrorism or sabotage.

In addition, the period during which the detained persons must be charged is extended to 20 days.

In the first reading, the draft law “On Amending the Codes on Criminal Liability” was adopted on December 7, 2022. After being adopted in the second reading, it must be approved by the Council of the Republic (the upper house of parliament), and then the document must be signed by President Alexander Lukashenko.

Recall that Belarus is the only country in Europe that currently uses the death penalty as a punishment. The execution of the sentence occurs through execution.
