Warm… coffee grounds

Vulnerable households in Karditsa will be heated economically and with many environmental benefits, thanks to the Energy Cooperative’s initiative to create pellet pellets from…coffee residue.

“We have placed a bin in the center of Karditsa so that cafeterias can throw away coffee residues (coffee grounds) there. This aroused interest in the school when the children, in cooperation with their teachers, decided to implement project, make your own coffeeand then save it and send it to us. The children have been participating in the social and environmental project for three months already, and they do it systematically, as a result of which, at the moment, they have collected almost 1 ton of grounds,” Vasilis Philippou, member of the board of directors of the Karditsa Energy Company, told GRTimes.

Having received the “raw materials”, the cooperative company, with the help of InCommOn, “mixed” the leftover coffee with chips provided by the municipality of Karditsa and produced the final product.

According to a member of the board of directors, this Karditsa Energy Cooperative Company was founded in 2010, and the original purpose was production of electricity from waste biomass. Since 2017, a plant has been operating in Karditsa that processes agricultural, basic, municipal and industrial waste, producing pellets at the output.

“Over the past few years, we have been trying to involve citizens in this process in order to convey to them the idea of a circular economy (recycling) that we want to implement. For our part, we are trying to find some forms of biomassthat are produced by citizens in everyday life. We intend to develop a system that will exploit and use “the entire wealth of the region” to produce alternative and sustainable fuels.”

Reportedly, the Karditsa Energy Cooperative Company, in cooperation with the municipality, replaced oil boiler in kindergarten Calliphonies on a pellet powered device. As a result, now the school fully covers its heating needs. The coffee pellet, as mentioned earlier, will be redistributed among families in need. Also, a kindergarten switched to pellets.
