The longest bridges in Greece that will shorten the journey from Athens to Thessaloniki by 1 hour

The two largest cities in Greece will become closer when the ambitious Maliaku Double Link (Διπλής Ζεύξης του Μαλιακού) project is implemented.

The road safety benefits that EO Athens-Thessaloniki has presented are impressive as, among other things, the “nightmare” in the area of the famous “Maliakos horseshoe” will finally end. The decision, which was finally made years later, concerned the reconstruction of the national road (Agios Konstantinos Raches), which was completed in 2015. In addition to connecting Maliakos through an underwater tunnel from Scarthea to Raches Phthiotides, the possibility of connecting it through two bridges was seriously considered.

This project has been the subject of discussion in our country since 2001. The “protagonists” were two bridges that would connect Asproneri Agios Konstantinos with the beach of Kavos Lichada (Northern Evia) and Vasilina of the municipality of Istia Edipsos (Northern Evia) with Cape Tapia. The construction of the road will take place between two bridges. The length of the first bridge will reach 4 km, and the second – 3 km, and thus both will become the longest in Greece, eclipsing the “glory” of the Rio-Antirrio bridge.

The benefits, if the project were implemented, would be numerous, since there would be a union of northern Evia with mainland Greece, and Athens would move closer to Thessaloniki. In this way, it would be possible to “eliminate the weak link”, the disadvantaged area of the Maliaka Horseshoe. In particular, the bridges will reduce the distance between the two largest cities in Greece by 70 km, and travel time by about 1 hour.
