When will the metro in Thessaloniki finally open?


The metro in Thessaloniki will be provided to residents and guests of the capital in accordance with the schedule, Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Georgios Karayiannis said.

The happy event was announced by Mr. Karayiannis during the opening of the school gym in Ampelokipi in Thessaloniki on Saturday 11 February.

Answering a question about the metro, the Deputy Minister said that the construction will be completed at the end of 2023. In addition, he said that the government is already preparing the next expansion of metro lines to the western part of the northern capital and to the airport.

Archaeological work at Venizelos station have been completed, and the final work on its design is being carried out as usual. To date, approximately 90% of the financial objectives of the construction contract have been implemented. The tender, in order to determine the operator of the subway, so far “is in limbo.” As reported, the relevant proposals will be presented at the end of February. While the line extension to Kalamaria is also going well.

It is reminded that mMetro Thessalonikiov (Μετρό Θεσσαλονίκης), the main project, will have a line length of 9.6 km, 13 modern stations and a railway station with a total area of ​​55 acres in the Pilea area.

Metro in Thessaloniki will have 18 super-automatic trains without a driver (latest technology), fully air-conditioned and with automatic door systems designed for better service and maximum passenger safety.

With the completion of the main project (and the connection to Kalamaria), 313,000 passengers are expected to be served daily. In addition, with the implementation of the project, about 57,000 fewer cars will circulate daily, which will lead to a reduction in CO2 emissions by 212 tons per day.
