Cyprus: Nikos Christodoulidis wins presidential election

With 100% of votes counted, Nikos Christodoulides was clearly in the lead, echoing what exit polls had previously suggested. Christodoulides received 51.91% of the vote and Andreas Mavroyiannis 48.09%.

Nikos Christodoulides served as Minister of Foreign Affairs from 2018 to 2022 and Government Spokesperson from 2014 to 2018.

In the village of Pera Pedi, the home village of President Nikos Anastasiades, all 5,358 votes were counted within the first half hour, giving Christodoulidis an overwhelming majority of 63.82%, while Mavroyiannis won 36.18%.

According to CyBC, 6% of the people who voted for Christodoulides in the first round chose to support Mavroyiannis in the second round.

Dizi’s vote was split in favor of Christodoulides, who received 52% of the party’s supporters, while Mavroiannis was supported by 43.5% of the island’s right-wing party. And 4.5% of the votes is not clear in which direction they swung.

Meanwhile, the two percent who chose Mavroyiannis in the first round went over to the camp of Christodoulides in the second. Vasa Kellakiu’s 48 votes were divided exactly in the middle – 23 votes for each candidate.

First elections in Cyprus took place on February 5, 2023, and on February 12 the second round took place. The Cypriots voted to elect the 8th President of the Republic of Cyprus, who will replace the current President, Nikos Anastasiadis, who is leaving after 10 years of rule and two presidential terms. In total, 14 candidates participated in the first round elections, which is the largest number in the history of the presidential elections in Cyprus. Of these, three party candidates and 11 independents.

Christodoulidis, 49, will take office on February 28.
