Patras: to school with your… basin

There are still enough plastic containers for collecting rainwater in the classrooms of an elementary school in Patras, but it is quite possible that soon you will need to bring your own basin from home – water pours from the roof during the rain.

But the point is not only that the desks have to be moved and the basins placed – there is also a high risk of electric shock to children. It is hard to imagine that all this is happening in 2023!

The 20th elementary school of Aroi in Patras is in a deplorable state. Last Thursday, when bad weather hit the country, only plastic containers placed on the floor between desks were saved from water. Every time it rains, classrooms, mostly first, second, and third, are flooded with water dripping from the ceilings, writes pelop.gr.

Despite repeated complaints from the school to the Deputy Mayor for Education and Sports of the Municipality of Patras (Δήμου Πατρέων), the situation remains simply dangerous. Water flows near lighting fixtures and electrical cables that are strewn across the ceilings of rooms, with a visible danger of electric shock. The roof is in a terrible state: the tiles are broken, large pieces are destroyed and huge holes have formed.

The Association of Parents and Guardians, the Association of Teachers and the director himself repeatedly sounded the alarm and appealed to the responsible Deputy Mayor Takis Petropoulos, but the problem has not been resolved. Apparently, the authorities are waiting until an emergency occurs, and only then they still have to do repairs. After all, their children probably attend educational institutions with more comfortable conditions for learning.
