Tragedy in Serres: elementary school student killed in explosion at school

The son of a well-known doctor in Serres, a sixth grade student of the 9th school, died due to an explosion in the school boiler room – its boiler was converted into a geothermal one.

The tragedy could have been avoided if the fatal explosion had occurred during the lesson, and not at recess, when the children were in the school yard. And it all happened due to the fact that the school decided to change the oil boiler to a geothermal one. The specialist who performed the work informed the director of the educational institution that he had finished, and the boiler switches remained in an inactive state.

The explosion happened during recess. He was so strong that the knocked out door flew off several meters, fatally injuring a 12-year-old boy. Of the three victims, the deceased is the oldest. The other two are students in first and fourth grade. They received first aid and are out of danger.

In a joint statement by the Ministry of the Interior and the Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs, as reported CNN Greececall for accountability in connection with the tragic incident:

“The tragic loss of a young student in Serra shocked us. Our thoughts are with his parents and family, and with the families of the affected children. We contacted the municipality responsible for running the school to find out exactly what happened. We will do everything in our power to investigate the causes of the tragic death and hold the culprit responsible.”
