Greek drivers are persistent traffic offenders

A total of 19,522 violations were confirmed during 91,425 traffic inspections carried out from November 27 to December 3, 2022 throughout Greece, according to data from the Ministry of Citizens’ Protection.

68% offenses associated with speeding, illegal parking, not wearing a safety helmet, driving without a driver’s license and not wearing a seatbelt.

In particular, violations confirmed by region are 3154 in Thessaloniki, 3145 in Attica, 2134 in Thessaly, 1716 in Crete, 1686 in Western Greece, 1398 in Epirus, 1203 in Central Macedonia, 1184 in East Macedonia and Thrace, 1015 in the Peloponnese. 880 traffic violations were recorded in Central Greece, 675 in the Ionian Islands, 477 in the northern Aegean, 452 in Western Macedonia and 403 in the southern Aegean. In particular, the offenses were confirmed:

  • for illegal parking 6 940,
  • speeding 4 115,
  • driving without driver’s license 983,
  • not using a seat belt 676,
  • non-use of protective helmet 644,
  • lack of documentation of KTEO 486,
  • for drunk driving 373,
  • 339 for using a mobile phone while driving,
  • 297 uninsured vehicles stopped,
  • 216 passed through a prohibitory (red) traffic light,
  • 132 made a departure into the oncoming lane,
  • 101 fined for wrong maneuvers,
  • 101 for exceeding the tonnage of trucks (where restrictions have been placed on their passage),
  • 94 for worn tires
  • 62 for driving in the opposite lane (on one-way roads),
  • 62 for illegal overtaking,
  • 53 for not keeping a safe distance,
  • 39 for distracting the driver,
  • 33 for not using light signals (did not turn on the turn signal bulb),
  • 25 for not using child seats,
  • 20 for traffic priority violation,
  • 7 for not wearing seat belts, and 3,724 other violations.

In addition, on a daily basis, during the week of November 28 to December 4, 2022, targeted actions and specialized controls were carried out in the area of ​​​​the coastal strip of the Athens-Sounio highway by employees of the Attica Traffic Authority in order to combat impromptu races, as well as to prevent other dangerous maneuvers and violations leading to traffic accidents, violating the safety of transportation, and the unhindered and safe movement of citizens.

A total of 260 checks of drivers and vehicles were carried out. 144 violations were recorded, for which appropriate administrative fines were imposed.

According to the Ministry of Citizens’ Protection, ΕΛΑΣ pays special attention to road safety issues, and in this context, inspections will continue with unrelenting intensity, with the aim of reducing traffic accidents and accidents.
