Nikos Dendias will visit Kyiv on Tuesday

The head of the Greek Foreign Ministry will visit the Ukrainian capital on Tuesday, as he announced yesterday at the Foreign Affairs Council of the European Union in Luxembourg:

We will have the opportunity today in the Council to have a new discussion on the situation that has developed in Ukraine. This is extremely important for me, because I hope to be in Kyiv tomorrow.

The trip was planned for October 6, but the dates were postponed. Dendias noted that the Ministerial Council will also discuss an agreement between Israel and Lebanon regarding maritime zones:

I will also have the opportunity to brief the Council on the so-called “memorandum” signed between the Government of Tripoli and Turkey on the exploitation of the resources of the maritime zones.

Dendias stressed that this memorandum poses additional risks to security and stability in the Mediterranean.

In early October, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu, who was on a visit to Tripoli, and PNU Foreign Minister Najla Mankush signed memorandums on cooperation between the two countries in the oil and gas sector, involving joint geological exploration. After the signing of the agreement, the text of the statement of the chairman of the House of Representatives based in the east of Libya, Akila Saleh, appeared, where he called “illegal any agreement signed by the Cabinet of Abdelhamid Dbeiba, in connection with the expiration of his term on December 24” 2021. The Foreign Ministers of Egypt, Sameh Shukri and Greece, Nikos Dendias, on October 9, after negotiations, called the agreements on cooperation in the oil and gas sector signed between the Government of National Unity (GNU) of Libya and Turkey illegal.

Shukri noted that the government in Tripoli, whose powers have expired, does not have the right to conclude agreements or memorandums of understanding. Dendias also said that the agreement “contradicts the principles of the UN”, and the Libyan government of national unity has long ceased to exist and does not represent the Libyan people, therefore, cannot sign or renew agreements regarding the future of the country. Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan and the former head of the Government of National Accord of Libya, Fayez Sarraj, who controlled only part of the territory of Libya, signed a memorandum on maritime zones and a memorandum on military cooperation at the end of November 2019. Greece considers it illegal, violating the rights of Greece to the shelf and the exclusive economic zone, writes GreekReporter.

Earlier, our publication reported that in July Nikos Dendias, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Greece, took part in the Conference on the restoration of Ukraine. He represented Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, and declared that Greece plans to take part in the restoration of Ukraine.
