Madrid protests against bullfighting

Thousands of people took to the streets and squares of Madrid, demanding at the legislative level to ban bullfighting in the Spanish capital.

“No to bullfighting!” they chanted, holding banners “Bullfighting is a school of cruelty”, “Bullfighting is a national disgrace” and handkerchiefs similar to those used at the San Fermin festival in Pamplona, where bullfighting and the running of the bulls take place. .

The demonstration, which was organized by PACMA – the Spanish political party for the protection of animal rights – took place on Saturday outside Madrid’s Las Ventas bullring. Activists demanded an immediate ban in Spain of bullfighting and other events involving bulls, including beserrades, where not adult animals are used, but young calves. The head of the association AVATMA (Association of Veterinarians Against Bullfighting and Cruelty to Animals) José Enrique Saldívar said:

“I understand that torture and cruelty to animals must be abolished, our association demands an end to bullfighting, using scientific arguments, our science says that these animals are suffering a lot.”

As writes en.publika.md, opinion polls show that public support for bullfighting is declining. And yet, annual events such as the bullfights in Pamplona still attract many spectators. A decrease in the number of bullfights has been noted in the country, however, about two thousand of them are held annually. Fans of the spectacular show claim that this is part of the national tradition, rooted in antiquity.
