Jordan sends Mi-26 fire helicopter to Greece

The fire helicopter, which was sent at the initiative of the king and government of Jordan, has been in Greece since July 29. It has a crew of 16 and will stay for a few more days, so it can act immediately if the need arises.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Climate Crises and Civil Protection, at an event held on August 2, Deputy Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Evangelos Tournas, expressing warm gratitude to Jordan, addressed the crew members in a greeting and stressed the importance of cooperation between the countries of our region to overcome the consequences of the climate crisis.

“No country can cope with these consequences alone, and we see how the whole of Western Europe has been seriously affected by forest fires this year. But in our country, too, every day we are faced with numerous and sometimes large fires that have so far managed to be localized Therefore, it is no coincidence that Greece is making efforts to strengthen the European Civil Protection Mechanism as a collective response EU to the challenges of climate change, as well as to strengthen cooperation with the countries of the Eastern Mediterranean and the Balkans. It is in the context of this cooperation, the role of Greece as the center of the European Mechanism for our region, as well as our excellent bilateral relations with Jordan, that we thank you for your practical support of our efforts,” – said Mr. Turnas.

For his part, Chargé d’Affaires of the Jordanian Embassy in Greece, Issa Alhidjazin, warmly thanked our country for its hospitality and highly appreciated the excellent level of Greek-Jordanian relations, as well as the constant readiness of both countries to provide mutual assistance in emergency situations.
