Matthew Yosaphat: The psychiatrist who deconstructed the “holy Greek family” has died

Matthew Yosaphat, one of Greece’s most famous psychiatrists, has died at the age of 85. For several years he had health problems.

Yosaphat was the founder and president of the Hellenic Society of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. He dared to break the taboo, to make out “Holy Greek family” and point out the bad personality characteristics of modern Greeks.

Therefore, the mother will be sick. That is why we see that many young people live with their mother even in old age. He is a protective son. Marriage is one of the main causes of chronic depression. 80% of couples in Greece don’t get along, 50% get divorced, 30% don’t get divorced for socio-economic reasons, 20% are at a relatively good level and only 5-10% are really happy. Most relationships are fake and established. They never found the perfect partner.”

Yosafat was born in Katerini in northern Greece in 1937. In 1963 he graduated from the Medical University of Athens and in 1967 became a neurologist-psychologist. He continued his studies in London, where he lived for 15 years. He taught at the University of London and the Towistock Centre, and became manager of the National Health System.

Returning to Greece, he became director of the Attica Children’s Psychiatric Hospital. He was the author of numerous books and articles, and left behind considerable research and therapeutic work. Yosafat believed that “if psychotherapy were preventive medicine, society would be a much better place.”
