Riots in Larisa over the death of 22-year-old Nikos Bitsakis

Under the slogan “No more irresponsibility in this country. Enough!” people took to the streets of Larisa yesterday because of the death of a 22-year-old student who died during the collapse of the wall of an abandoned house.

The tragedy occurred last Sunday, at about 8 o’clock, in the city center. For a man collapsed brick pillar, which held the metal gates of a long-abandoned house on Asclepius Street. Sorrow reigns in both Larissa and Chania, the birthplace of the young student Nikos Bitsakis. People leave flowers and lighted candles at the place of his death.

In March last year, part of the wall of an empty house was damaged by a strong earthquake in the area, then it was restored. But everything else … Outraged people ask:

Why has no one responded to complaints filed with the Planning Department? Why, if the officials knew about it, they did nothing about the danger of the building?

They demand:

Enough irresponsibility in this country. Enough. For our children. For our lives. For our culture.

At the gate, next to which a pillar fell and crushed a 22-year-old guy, someone left a note:

“Have a nice trip, my boy! Sorry about our world.”

Nikos Bitsakis was born and raised in Chania, and after graduating from the University of Thessaly, he moved to Larissa to study. He was actively involved in cycling, was a member of the Talos Club and received many awards and medals in the races in which he participated.

About what happened larissanet.gr told two eyewitnesses who immediately ran to the scene of the tragedy. One of them says: “His head was crushed, it seemed that he was not alive. I took his pulse for five minutes, then he stopped.”

They also pointed to the damage caused by the earthquake on March 3, 2021 to the fence of the building. Asclepius Street was recently reconstructed, but without any additional work on this building. newsbreak.gr.
