New Democracy expelled its MEP for “discrediting Greece”

The Greek ruling New Democracy party expelled MEP Giorgos Kirtsos from its membership on Friday by decision of Pavlos Marinakis, secretary of the party’s political committee.

The ND has expelled the MEP because his social media posts “discredit Greece,” the party said in a statement.

“Mr Kirtsos, elected from the New Democracy party with a mandate to promote Greece’s position in the European Parliament, does exactly the opposite in his posts. He discredits the country around the world by questioning the independence of Greek justice and comparing Greece to countries that violate the rule of law. “His position is offensive to all those who entrusted him with their representation. Any criticism of the government was allowed, even if it went beyond. However, there can be no tolerance for defamation of the country,” the ND said in a statement.

Kirtsos, 69, reacted by saying he was expelled because he challenged the party leadership by criticizing the handling of important issues such as the pandemic, energy prices, “covering up the Novartis scandal.”
