In Germany, 125 Catholic priests have declared their affiliation as LGBTQ+

In Germany, 125 priests and clerics of the Catholic Church have declared their membership in the LGBTQ+ community, German weekly reports. Zeit.

After the clerics made a collective coming out of the church, publicly declaring themselves a queer community, they demanded a change in church labor laws.

Among those who disclosed their LGBTQ+ affiliation were priests, referent pastors and leaders of Catholic communities, church school teachers, employees and employees of church services.

Catholics held an action “#OutInCatholic For the Church Without Fear”, in which they publicly admitted that they are queer, that is, people who do not have heterosexual ties.

Participants of the action posted a complete list of demands on their Instagram page. The activists want to change the Church’s labor law, which would state that “sexual orientation and gender identity are no longer grounds for incarceration or dismissal.” They also want “slanderous statements of gender and sexuality” to be removed from church teaching.

The publication reports that about 20 Catholic associations and associations have expressed solidarity with queer Catholics. In a joint statement, they said they should no longer “exist in the shadows out of fear if they fit the gender pattern standardized by the church.”

According to the priest Bernd Mönkebüscher, who initiated the blessing for homosexual couples in 2021, the participants of the action were inspired by the example when 185 German actors and actresses declared their belonging to the LGBT community in 2021. In March 2021, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith at the Vatican recognized the “presence of positive elements” in same-sex relationships.

Prior to this, on January 16, it was reported that in Germany there was a position of the commissioner of the federal government for the implementation of sexual and gender diversity. They became the deputy of the Bundesrat from the Green Party Sven Lehman. The commissioner will be responsible for the national project on sexual and gender diversity, and coordinate the work of federal agencies on projects related to LGBT people.
